To The Image Church,

I was thinking today, that if I was you, I would want more information about our church when it comes to how we handle money. I’m sure I was supposed to be telling you this info a while ago, but this church planting thing is more complex than I could have imagined!

So we are getting by with admin and finance with a lot of help from awesome Image volunteers, but we can certainly improve in our communication about operations and finances. Here’s my first shot at it.

1. HOW DOES FINANCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY WORK AT THE IMAGE CHURCH? 

All of our spending is vetted through three layers of accountability. 

The first layer is on a local level where staff (me) and volunteers work on the budget, expense reports, and reimbursements for church related expenses. We work to make sure personal expenses never become church expenses. 

The second tier of accountability is our bookkeeper. We outsource our book keeping to a company in Atlanta that balances all of our accounts. The company is called DIME, feel free to check them out. They use widely accepted best practices and make sure we are staying on track, filing and keeping all the needed data to be above reproach.

The third tier of accountability is The Image Church Board of Directors, which consists of myself, a pastor in Orlando and a CEO in Seattle. The BOD receive's our monthly bookkeeping report from DIME. The BOD reviews these numbers and sees income and expenses with the ability to dial into every expense, big and small. The BOD's role is to keep integrity central to our operations.

2. HOW AM I (MATT JENSEN) PAID?

I receive a pay check every 2 weeks like most of you. Our bookkeeping / payroll company, DIME, oversees this process. My salary is set by the two other members of the Board of Directors using The 2012-2013 Compensation Handbook for Church Staff published by Christianity Today. 

3. WHAT IS THE IMAGE CHURCH’S ANNUAL BUDGET?

With it being our first year as a church and having grown from 15 people to 115 people in 8 months, we have had a moving target for a budget. No month has been the same as the month before in any category of spending.

In January, I had projected a budget of $135,000 for 2013. I think we will end up having spent close to $150K for 2013. Not a bad guess in January, God has been so faithful to build his church faster than I had expected!

Between January and August 2013, we have spent $107,519.11 for all operations, facilities, and payroll. 

4. WHERE IS THE MONEY COMING FROM NOW?

For several months in 2012, I raised money from other churches and lots of my friends. Outside donors have given $55,862 between January and September. 

As a church, we have given $56,913 between January and September of 2013.

This means we are 50% self supported financially. Half of the resources used so far to do ministry have come from people who are not ministered to by our church, most of whom have never been to The Image Church before. How generous is that! 

5. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE OUTSIDE DONORS STOP SUPPORTING THE IMAGE?

The churches supporting us are scheduled to begin decreasing their giving starting in January 2014 and stopping at the end of 2015. They have pledged to give most of their gifts in this first year (2013) and less and less each year afterwards. This means that over the next two years we have to grow in our giving to be fully financially self supported, to fully carry the financial burden of this mission, with the resources God has given us to steward. We want to be in a position to generously support other church plants, just like we have been supported. 

In other words, if we doubled in our giving, we'd be able to be fully self supported at this stage in our church plant.
